SERP
The search engine results page. Everything Google shows for a query: ads, the map pack, AI answers, and the organic links underneath.
Organic vs paid
Organic results are earned and cost nothing per click. Paid results are ads you stop appearing in the moment you stop paying.
Crawling and indexing
Crawling is Google reading your pages. Indexing is Google deciding to store them. A page that is never indexed cannot rank, no matter how good it is.
Keyword intent
What the searcher actually wants. “Car accident settlement calculator” is research. “Car accident lawyer near me” is someone ready to call.
Backlink
A link from another website to yours. Google treats it as a vote of confidence, which is why a link from a bar association outweighs a hundred directory listings.
Domain authority
A third-party score estimating how much weight your whole site carries. Useful for comparing firms, but it is not a number Google itself uses.
Anchor text
The clickable words in a link. “Sacramento trust attorney” tells Google what the destination page is about; “click here” tells it nothing.
301 redirect
A permanent forward from an old URL to a new one. The single most important thing to get right in a website rebuild, and the most common thing done wrong.
Canonical tag
A signal telling Google which version of a near-duplicate page is the real one, so your own pages stop competing with each other.
Map pack
The three local businesses Google shows with a map above the organic results. For most practice areas this is the most valuable real estate on the page.
Google Business Profile
Your firm listing behind the map pack. Hours, reviews, photos, practice areas. Neglecting it costs more local visibility than almost anything else.
Citations and NAP
Your name, address, and phone number as listed across the web. When they disagree with each other, Google trusts your location less.
Proximity
How close the searcher is to your office. It is a ranking factor you cannot control, which is why one office cannot own an entire metro.
Service area
The geography you tell Google you serve. Claiming the whole state rarely helps; it usually dilutes the markets you could actually win.
E-E-A-T
Experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trust. Google’s framework for whether a source deserves to be believed, and it weighs heaviest on legal and medical topics.
Topical authority
Being recognized as a deep source on one subject rather than a shallow source on twenty. It is why focus beats volume in competitive practice areas.
Money page
A practice-area page built to convert, not to inform. These are the pages that earn fees, and they deserve the most attention.
Hyperlocal page
A page written for one city or county, with real local detail. Done well it ranks; done as a template with the city name swapped, it gets ignored.
Internal linking
How your own pages point to each other. It tells Google which pages matter most and moves visitors toward the ones that convert.
Schema markup
Code that labels your content for machines: this is an attorney, this is a review, this is an office. It is how AI systems read your firm reliably.
AI Overviews
The AI-written answer at the top of Google. It often satisfies the searcher completely, which means the click you used to get never happens.
GEO and AEO
Generative and answer engine optimization. The work of becoming the source an AI cites, rather than the page a human scrolls to find.
LLM citation
When ChatGPT, Gemini, or an AI Overview names your firm as the source. The new version of ranking first, and it is measurable.
Zero-click search
A search that ends without anyone visiting a website. A growing share of all searches, and the reason visibility now matters beyond traffic.
Local Services Ads
Google Screened ads that sit above everything else and charge per lead rather than per click. Badge eligibility requires background checks and licensing.
CPC vs CPA
Cost per click is what you pay for a visit. Cost per acquisition is what you pay for a lead. Only one of them relates to your revenue.
Quality Score
Google’s rating of how relevant your ad and landing page are. A higher score lowers what you pay for the same position.
Negative keywords
Terms you tell Google to exclude. In legal, this is how you stop paying for people searching for jobs, free advice, or the opposing party.
Attribution
Connecting a signed case back to the marketing that produced it. Hard to do properly, and the difference between a report and a guess.
Qualified lead
A contact that matches the cases you actually want. Defined with your intake team, not assumed by your agency, or the number means nothing.
Cost per signed case
What it truly costs to acquire a client. The only marketing number that belongs in a conversation about profit.
Call tracking
Assigning phone numbers to marketing sources so you know which channel produced a call, and can listen to how intake handled it.
