    Technical SEO is the operating discipline that keeps a law firm's important pages available, understandable, connected, and safe to change. It does not start with a score. It starts with the pages that support wanted matters and the systems that deliver them.

    A complete program defines page ownership, reconciles the real URL inventory, controls crawling and indexing, verifies rendered content, connects entities and decisions, protects releases, and separates implementation proof from search and business outcomes.

    Start with a page-purpose register

    List the pages the firm would protect during a bad release: core practices, real offices, current attorneys, high-value resources, and contact/intake paths. Record the intended reader, business role, canonical owner, indexability, source owner, template, related pages, conversion path, and change risk.

    This register prevents a crawler from deciding importance by URL depth or traffic alone. A narrow referral guide can matter with little search activity. A high-traffic page can be obsolete or unrelated to wanted work.

    Reconcile the actual inventory

    No single source is complete. Combine CMS records, XML sitemaps, internal crawls, Search Console, relevant analytics, known backlinks, redirect rules, media, subdomains, campaign pages, and prior migration maps. Deduplicate carefully while retaining historical relationships.

    Classify each URL:

    • current canonical public page;
    • useful alternate that needs a distinct purpose;
    • redirect to an approved equivalent;
    • intentionally excluded utility or private page;
    • valid unavailable/retired resource;
    • generated variant requiring control; or
    • unresolved pending owner decision.

    Do not treat “not in sitemap” as deletion authority or “in Search Console” as proof that a URL remains current.

    Verify access and delivery before optimization

    For priority URLs, inspect DNS/HTTPS where relevant, response status, redirect hops, robots access, headers, delivered HTML, rendered output, canonical signals, internal links, sitemap membership, and Search Console observations.

    An accessible browser page can still carry noindex. A noindex rule can fail if crawling is blocked and Google cannot read it. Google's current noindex documentation explains this distinction.

    Sample over time for intermittent failures. If a firewall or application sometimes returns 5xx responses, a successful one-time crawl does not close the issue.

    Decide which pages belong in search

    Indexability is an editorial and business decision expressed through technical controls. Ask whether the page serves a distinct public need, remains accurate, has an accountable owner, and belongs in the firm's architecture.

    Practice, office, attorney, and useful guide pages often have public roles. Internal search results, staging pages, duplicate print views, thank-you pages, thin tag archives, and expired campaign variants often do not. The facts decide; no page type is automatically indexable.

    Document the decision before changing robots, meta directives, canonicals, or sitemaps. Removing an exclusion does not guarantee indexing.

    Verify what the rendered page communicates

    Compare raw HTML and rendered behavior for the page's essential content, internal links, metadata, structured data, forms, phone controls, and consent/analytics behavior.

    JavaScript is not inherently an SEO defect. The problem is a specific implementation that delays, hides, replaces, or fails to expose important content and links reliably. Google describes crawling, rendering, and indexing stages and practical limitations in its JavaScript SEO basics.

    Test templates and states, not just a homepage. A successful desktop render does not establish a working mobile intake path or an error-free attorney directory filter.

    Give each page one preferred identity

    Redirects, canonical elements, sitemaps, internal links, and content purpose should agree about the preferred URL. Google's canonical documentation describes several signals and makes clear that Google ultimately selects the canonical it considers representative. Read the canonical guide.

    Do not solve an ownership dispute with a tag. If /denver/truck-accidents/ and /truck-accidents/ are nearly identical, decide whether Denver has a distinct service, evidence, people, and reader task. Then differentiate or consolidate. A self-referencing canonical cannot create uniqueness.

    Connect practices, offices, attorneys, and resources

    Use crawlable links that correspond to real reader movement: office to locally available practices and attorneys; practice to responsible attorneys, relevant offices, and deeper decisions; attorney to current work and useful explanations; guide to the service or next question it supports.

    Google recommends ordinary anchor elements with resolvable URLs and descriptive anchor context. Read Google's link guidance. Juris Digital's internal-linking guide covers the deeper editorial task.

    Avoid generating every practice-city permutation. Similar pages created to capture many queries can become doorway abuse when they funnel users to substantially similar destinations; Google's current spam policies describe the boundary. JD-046 handles the full architecture decision.

    Control generated states at their source

    Group filters, internal search, pagination, tags, tracking parameters, sort orders, printer views, and calendars by pattern. Record how each state is created, linked, crawled, indexed, canonicalized, measured, and retired.

    The durable fix usually lives in routing, templates, link generation, or CMS rules. Endless URL-by-URL exclusions leave the generator intact. Protect campaign measurement while keeping campaign variants out of permanent navigation and canonical ownership.

    Improve performance around real user tasks

    Current Core Web Vitals use LCP for loading, INP for interaction, and CLS for visual stability. Field data at the 75th percentile describes real-user experience when sufficient data exists; lab traces help reproduce and diagnose. Read current Web Vitals definitions.

    Segment by template and device. A fast homepage does not clear a slow practice template. Repair shared causes while regression-testing call controls, forms, consent, accessibility, analytics, and visual meaning.     Keep structured data subordinate to visible truth

    Use markup to describe real entities and content. The business, offices, people, articles, breadcrumbs, and other eligible types must match the page and governed firm records. Validation establishes syntax or feature eligibility; it does not guarantee a rich result or search selection.

    Assign every firm fact an owner and update trigger. Do not invent hours, prices, ratings, credentials, offices, or services to complete a template. JD-048 handles LegalService, Person, local-business relationships, and current feature limits.

    Protect migrations and releases

    Before a redesign, CMS change, domain move, navigation restructuring, or large content release, preserve:

    1. canonical and historical URL inventory;
    2. page-purpose and redirect decisions;
    3. search, link, content, analytics, and intake baseline;
    4. template and priority-URL tests;
    5. access, approvals, release owner, and rollback;
    6. staging checks without exposing staging to search;
    7. immediate live verification; and
    8. post-release search and business monitoring.

    Test redirects against intended equivalent destinations, not merely for any 3xx response. Verify that analytics and intake still work rather than declaring technical continuity from URL tests alone.     Work one firm through the system

    The following example is fictional. Northline Injury Law has three real offices and is moving to a new CMS after adding a trucking practice. The firm identifies 20 priority URLs: six practice pages, three offices, five attorney profiles, and six guides.

    Inventory reconciliation produces 168 distinct records: 64 current canonical public pages, 38 retired URLs needing redirect decisions, 22 utility pages approved for exclusion, 31 media files, and 13 unresolved records. These total 168. The firm does not force a disposition for the 13 unknowns before their owners respond.

    Pre-release checks find eight new practice URLs canonicalizing to old staging equivalents, three guides absent from contextual navigation, and a mobile contact control that shifts after a late script loads. The team corrects the canonical template, connects the guides from the relevant practices, and stabilizes the contact component. It verifies content, links, forms, phone routing, and analytics for all 20 priority URLs.

    Of the 38 retired URLs, 34 have approved equivalent destinations. Four have none and retain useful unavailable responses rather than redirecting to the homepage. The release log preserves every decision.

    Immediate acceptance shows 20/20 priority pages returning the intended response, canonical, indexability, essential rendered content, and working contact path; 34/34 approved redirects reach the correct destination without a chain. This verifies implementation, not search recovery.

    Thirty days later, Google's reporting shows 17 priority pages indexed, two discovered but not indexed, and one practice page treated as a duplicate with a different canonical. The team investigates that page's content and signals. It does not reopen all 20 fixes or claim the 17 indexed pages gained rankings because of the migration.

    Intake and search outcomes stay in a separate cohort. The firm records suitable inquiries, service fit, and mature matters by landing path while preserving seasonality, brand, paid, referral, and other influences. Technical completion, search processing, visibility, and business outcomes answer different questions.

    Run technical ownership as a recurring decision

    Maintain a page register, release log, redirect map, generated-URL rules, performance baseline, structured-data source, alert owners, and quarterly review. End each review with create, repair, consolidate, preserve, monitor, or retire decisions—not a fresh export of every warning.
